About this position
7 fully funded PhD student positions are available in Computational & Experimental Plant Sciences through the International Max Planck Research School on Interdisciplinary Plant Biology (IMPRS), a collaboration between the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research and the University of Cologne in Germany.
The programme is designed for highly qualified doctoral researchers from Germany and around the world. Training is in English and students are supported by an advisory committee, professional skills training, and an international, interdisciplinary research environment.
Research within the school focuses on fundamental biological processes in plants and their application to innovative plant breeding. More than 30 research groups work on topics such as regulatory networks, reproductive development, organ geometry, growth, innate immunity, and microbiome effects on plant performance. Methods span genetics and genomics, structural biochemistry, advanced imaging, and computational and mathematical modelling across multiple plant species.
Applicants should hold, or expect to hold, a Master’s degree in a related subject, and should demonstrate strong academic and research excellence as well as fluent written and spoken English. The positions are fully funded for three years, with the possibility of extension, and the stipend/salary follows the Max Planck Society doctoral funding framework (TVöD 13, 65%).
Apply online by 5 January 2027. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in March 2027, and successful applicants are expected to start between summer 2027 and 1 October 2027. Project details and host groups are listed on the IMPRS proposals page.
