About this position
The Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School of Literary Studies (FSGS) at Freie Universität Berlin invites applications for its 2027 doctoral intake. The program is designed for outstanding candidates whose dissertation projects in literary studies are theoretically and conceptually strong and situated within a cultural-historical, transregional, transtemporal, and/or intermedial framework.
For 2027, the FSGS offers up to 10 PhD positions for a duration of 3 to 4 years. The program welcomes candidates with secured external funding, such as a scholarship or a research assistant position, as well as applicants without external funding. Up to 5 particularly outstanding applicants in the latter category may receive a nine-month scholarship of EUR 1103 starting in June 2027 and participate in workshops designed to help secure further external funding. Applicants who cannot be offered a scholarship may still be supported by the management in finding funding and may join selected workshops and digital modules.
In addition to the doctoral places, the FSGS announces 3 fellowships for literature students from the Global South for a period of 3 months, subject to available funds, and 1–2 CSC fellowships as part of the FUB-CSC program for graduate students in the humanities with a focus on German Studies from the People’s Republic of China.
The FSGS is a structured doctoral program and can only be studied full-time. The school strongly recommends that applicants secure external funding for the duration of their doctoral studies and advises against self-financing through non-academic part-time employment. Applicants who already have alternative funding sources and are not seeking external funding should state this in the application process.
The application deadline is 15 November 2026 at 23:59 CET. Full details and the online application information are available on the FSGS funding webpage.
