About this position
The Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (CPRA) is a federal postdoctoral funding program administered by CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC in Canada. It supports outstanding postdoctoral researchers across health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary projects.
Funding: $70,000 per year for 24 months. Additional supplementary funding may be available for priority research areas such as AI, quantum, cybersecurity, biotechnology, clean technology, climate resilience, food and water security, democratic resilience, advanced materials, and defence/dual-use technologies. Indigenous and Black postdoctoral researchers may also be eligible for designated support.
Eligibility highlights: Applicants must hold or expect to hold a doctoral or health professional degree before the award start date, must not hold a tenure-track or tenured faculty position, and must have completed degree requirements within the last three years before September 1 of the application year, unless eligible extensions apply. The proposed research must be predominantly research-oriented and significantly distinct from the doctoral thesis.
Location: Awards may be held at eligible institutions in Canada or, for eligible applicants, at approved international institutions. Canadian federal government research institutions are not eligible host sites.
Application: Apply through the agency that best matches your subject area: CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC. Submit electronically through the relevant online system and ensure referees and institutional nominators upload their materials before the deadline. The NSERC deadline shown on the page is October 17.
