About this position

The Data61 PhD Scholarship program at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is designed to foster the development of top-quality doctoral students in Australia's data-skilled workforce. This prestigious scholarship offers outstanding postgraduate students the opportunity to advance their academic and research careers within one of Australia's most trusted research organisations. Data61 provides a diverse, inclusive, and flexible working environment, empowering scholars to create impactful digital and data solutions.

Scholars benefit from access to a world-class research environment, tailored coaching, and development programs, as well as a supportive community dedicated to building dynamic and impactful research careers. The program is structured so that students work closely with both Data61 researchers and university supervisors on projects aligned with Data61's strategic goals. Scholarships are awarded in partnership with Australian universities, ensuring comprehensive support and guidance from both academic and industry experts.

Eligibility for the Data61 PhD Scholarship is open to both domestic and international students. Applicants must currently reside in Australia or, if overseas, hold a valid visa to study in Australia. Key requirements include holding a first-class honours (H1) Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant research area (completed or near completion), having applied for admission to a PhD program at an Australian university or having completed less than 12 months of PhD study at an Australian university at the start of the scholarship, and having a university supervisor willing to supervise them. Candidates must not already hold a PhD degree and must be ready to commence within the specified period. It is recommended that applicants secure admission to a PhD program before applying for the Data61 scholarship.

The scholarship offers generous funding: a full stipend of $42,000 per annum for the first two years, increasing to $44,000 from the third year. For students who receive a university base stipend, a top-up scholarship valued at $10,000 per annum is available. Additionally, scholarships include learning and development expenses of up to $5,000 over the term, with the maximum duration being 3 years and 6 months. The use of these funds is at the discretion of CSIRO and the student's university supervisor. Scholars are required to maintain satisfactory academic progress and engagement with Data61, with progress monitored through annual reviews conducted by the university review panel and Data61 supervisors.

To apply, candidates must submit their applications through the CSIRO online recruitment portal. Opportunities are advertised on the CSIRO Studentships and Scholarships website when open. Applicants are advised to bookmark the site and create a personal profile to apply. Applications or CVs sent via email will not be accepted and will be deleted in accordance with CSIRO's privacy policy.

For further information, including FAQs and details about application assessment, leave allowances, and converting to part-time study, candidates are encouraged to visit the CSIRO Studentships and Scholarships website. The Data61 PhD Scholarship is an excellent opportunity for aspiring researchers in data and digital science to join a team of experts and contribute to impactful scientific discovery in Australia.
