About this position

The Faculty of Engineering at Monash University is offering two fully funded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) positions exclusively for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander candidates. These positions are part of the Monash Indigenous Research Scholarship programme and are designed to advance First Nations’ peoples interests within the field of engineering. The PhD opportunities are based at the Clayton campus and span 3.5 years, providing a supportive and inclusive environment for Indigenous researchers.

Successful applicants will receive a generous tax-free stipend of $53,608 per annum (2025 full-time rate, indexed annually), plus an $8,000 per annum top-up stipend from the Faculty of Engineering. Additional financial support includes a $4,000 research cost allowance for fieldwork or conference participation, a relocation allowance of up to $1,000 for interstate candidates, and a Monash Graduate Research Office (MGRO) Travel Grant valued up to $1,265. The scholarship is structured to support research, professional development, and active participation in the Faculty’s Indigenous research community.

Monash University’s Faculty of Engineering is internationally recognised for its research addressing complex societal challenges and delivering practical technological solutions across infrastructure, manufacturing, digital systems, energy, and environmental sustainability. PhD candidates will join one of the Faculty’s five departments and be supervised by world-class researchers at the forefront of engineering innovation. The research environment is collaborative, interdisciplinary, and committed to supporting diverse perspectives.

Applicants should have a strong academic background in engineering or a related discipline, such as science, mathematics, data science, computer science, environmental or sustainability studies, design, manufacturing, or technology fields. Candidates must demonstrate a strong academic record, interest in research and innovation, motivation to solve real-world engineering challenges, and commitment to completing an independent research program. Experience in related fields and roles will be considered, and applicants must meet Monash University’s PhD admission criteria.

This opportunity is open only to domestic applicants who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, as per Section 12 (1) of the Equal Opportunity Act 2011 (Vic). The selection committee will evaluate applicants holistically, prioritising those with research and/or professional experience and a strong academic track record. Candidates are encouraged to propose projects aligned with their interests and career goals; all research topics relevant to engineering will be considered, including interdisciplinary and novel ideas.

To apply, candidates should submit an Expression of Interest by email, including a cover letter, evidence of academic transcripts and qualifications, a curriculum vitae with any published works, and a research proposal or confirmation to co-develop a project with a supervisor. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed and supported to identify an appropriate supervisor, develop a research proposal, apply for scholarships, and prepare for commencement in 2026. Applications will close once both roles are filled, but not before Thursday 25 June 2026, 11:55pm AEST. Early applications are strongly encouraged as assessment will occur on an ongoing basis.

For further information, applicants can consult the Monash scholarship policy and procedures or contact the Indigenous Research Team at [email protected].
