About this position
The South East Doctoral Training Arc (SEDarc) is offering ESRC-funded PhD studentships for September 2027 entry across the social sciences. The programme is delivered through a consortium of six higher education institutions in London and the south-east: University of Kent, Kingston University, University of Reading, Royal Holloway, University of London, University of Surrey, and University of Sussex.
SEDarc supports interdisciplinary doctoral research through five challenge-led pathways: Living Sustainably, Healthy Thriving Communities, Inclusive Economic Growth, Secure, Effective, & Trusted Institutions, and Transformative Technologies for Society. The training environment includes advanced research skills development, placements, and an individual research project.
Funding covers UK tuition fees and provides a UKRI home-rate stipend. The post notes that for 2026/27 the UK fee was £5,238 and the stipend was £21,805 (£23,805 with London weighting), while 2027/28 rates are not yet announced. Overseas applicants may have the difference between home and international tuition fees covered by SEDarc institutions, except at the University of Reading.
Eligibility is open to UK and international students. Applicants must be nominated by one of the six SEDarc institutions, and each institution has its own internal deadline and process. The final SEDarc deadline is 29 January 2027 at 16:00 GMT. The consortium also reserves up to three ring-fenced scholarships for home students from certain Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups, subject to the published eligibility criteria.
Students without a Masters degree in the social sciences may also be eligible for funding to undertake an approved Masters course within the SEDarc consortium. For queries, applicants should contact the administrator at their chosen institution.
