About this position
North Carolina State University’s Center for Geospatial Analytics is recruiting doctoral students for three fully funded GeoAI fellowships beginning in Fall 2027. The opportunities are part of the PhD in Geospatial Analytics program and bring together geospatial science, artificial intelligence, environmental modeling, and decision support.
The first fellowship focuses on autonomous AI for GIS and natural-hazard simulation. The student will develop an agentic GeoAI system able to plan and execute complete geographic information system and hazard-simulation workflows, translating plain-language questions into HPC-scale flood or landslide forecasts.
The second project explores GeoAI for circular bioeconomy decision support. As part of REFRAME, a Schmidt Sciences-funded platform, the student will lead the geospatial component connecting AI and data to evaluate biomass availability for growers, policymakers, and researchers across the rural economy.
The third fellowship concerns GeoAI-guided discovery for complex land and climate decisions. This project will build multimodal AI that combines group dialogue with spatio-temporal gameplay to strengthen collective decision-making around long-term land and climate solutions.
Faculty mentors Paul Liu, Daniela Jones, and Georgina Sanchez will mentor the incoming doctoral researchers within the Center for Geospatial Analytics at North Carolina State University. The fellowship package includes substantial financial support, tuition, and health insurance, creating a research-focused environment without teaching assistant obligations in the initial fellowship period.
These fellowships are specifically intended for domestic applicants who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
