The University of Pretoria, in partnership with the Malaria Consortium, is offering the Dr Sylvia Meek Scholarship for Entomology for the 2026 academic intake. This prestigious scholarship supports a research-only MSc in Entomology, with a focus on public health, vector biology, and malaria control. The program is hosted by the Department of Zoology and Entomology and is designed to train the next generation of vector biologists in Africa, addressing the continent’s critical shortage of technical specialists in the fight against malaria and other vector-borne diseases.

The scholarship provides full financial support, including 100% tuition coverage, a research allowance of ZAR 70,000 (ZAR 35,000/year), a living stipend of ZAR 120,000/year for accommodation and board, and for non-South African nationals, international travel, visa costs, and comprehensive health insurance. The MSc is a two-year, research-only program, and scholars will have access to advanced laboratory facilities and supervision by leading experts in entomology and public health.

Applicants must be nationals of eligible African countries and hold an Honours degree or equivalent in Entomology or a related biological science (NQF level 8). Candidates must be no older than 35 at the time of submission, demonstrate proficiency in English, and show a strong interest in medical entomology and vector-borne disease control. The application process involves developing a two-page research proposal in partnership with a potential supervisor, submitting a cover letter, academic transcripts, proof of English proficiency (if required), a personal statement, and two letters of recommendation. Research topics include mosquito community structure, the impact of heatwaves on mosquito vectors, and the effects of insecticides on mosquito gut microbiomes.
