About this position
The African Climate Collaborative at the University of Cape Town is inviting applications for 12 fully funded PhD fellowships in Climate and Development. This is a 4-year doctoral training programme designed to build a new generation of African scholars working on the continent’s most urgent climate and development challenges.
The programme combines one year of structured pre-doctoral coursework with three years of thesis research under supervision, plus doctoral skills training. Each fellowship is attached to a specific research topic and supervisory team, so applicants must choose one topic only.
Research areas span a wide range of interdisciplinary themes, including climate change, environmental science, urban climate adaptation, water infrastructure, energy transition, biodiversity conservation, remote sensing, hydrology, fisheries, climate-resilient estuaries, business climate adaptation, education, and political economy/finance.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must have a completed Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, be citizens of an African country, and be under 35 years old as of 1 February 2027. African applicants living outside Africa are also welcome. Successful candidates must also apply for admission to a PhD at UCT in order to receive the fellowship.
Required documents: CV (max 5 pages, including 3 referees), writing sample, Bachelor’s and Master’s transcripts, motivation letter, and a copy of ID or passport.
Deadline: 15 October 2026 at 23:00 (SAST). Applicants should clearly indicate the single research topic they are applying for and submit the complete application online.
