About this position

The UCL EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award (UELA) offers approximately 50 fully funded PhD studentships for the 2027/28 academic year at University College London. Around 130 advertised doctoral projects span the breadth of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) remit.

Projects cover a wide range of engineering, physical sciences, computing, mathematical, materials, and related research areas. The catalogue includes both standard projects and collaborative projects co-funded with external partners, such as industrial organisations. This structure provides opportunities for doctoral research in discipline-specific and interdisciplinary environments, with collaborative projects offering engagement beyond the university.

UELA students will join the relevant UCL department, research group, laboratory, or project team associated with their selected project. Research will be supervised by the academic team listed for that project and supported by UCL's wider doctoral research environment. The programme is designed for students to complete a substantial research project and submit their thesis within the funded period.

The award supports both Home and International applicants, although International recruitment is capped under EPSRC rules. Students may study full-time or, for eligible Home students, part-time. The studentship is expected to begin on 1 October 2027, subject to exceptional circumstances.

What's required

Applicants must meet UCL's academic entry requirements and any additional academic requirements of the department hosting the selected project. Applicants must assess their Home or International fee status; International students are eligible but are subject to an EPSRC cap of up to 30% of recruits and project-specific fee restrictions. Applicants must be prospective students; those already enrolled in another postgraduate research programme must restart their PhD. Full-time or part-time study is available for Home students, with part-time study at a minimum of 50% FTE; part-time study is not available to International students. International candidates may need to provide English-language evidence, obtain ATAS clearance depending on nationality, and apply for a Student visa. Selection is based primarily on academic merit and includes doctoral research motivation, suitability, knowledge and skills, research experience, and research outcomes.

How to apply

Review the UELA guidance and project catalogue, select an eligible advertised project, and submit the application through the UELA 27-28 application portal. Submit the application and references by 8 January 2027 at noon UK time; applicants are encouraged to submit by 16 December 2026.
