About this position
Applications are now open for a fully funded Walsh Scholarship PhD jointly offered by Teagasc and the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science. The project is titled “An Examination of Labour Use on Irish Beef Cattle Farms” and focuses on beef production, farm management, agricultural technology, and applied research.
The research addresses a major challenge in Ireland’s beef sector: labour availability and labour efficiency on family-run beef farms. The successful PhD candidate will investigate how labour is used on suckler and dairy-beef farms, develop methods to quantify labour use, and identify work practices and technologies that can improve efficiency. The project includes the use of innovative digital tools, including a smartphone app, to collect real-time labour data directly from farmers.
Supervisors: Paul Crosson (Teagasc) and Jim Kinsella (UCD).
Location: Registered at UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science and based at Teagasc Grange, Ireland’s national centre for beef research.
Funding: Fully funded four-year PhD through the Walsh Scholars Programme, with a €25,000 annual tax-free stipend and university fees covered subject to programme funding limits.
Eligibility / requirements: Applicants should have a strong interest in beef production, farm management, agricultural technology, and applied research. The application requires a CV including two referees and a 1–2 page personal statement outlining interest in the project and suitability for the role.
Deadline: Friday, 17 July 2026 at 5.00pm. Start date: 1 October 2026.
This is a strong opportunity for a student interested in sustainable Irish beef production, labour efficiency, and data-driven agricultural research within two leading Irish research institutions.
