About this position
The Trinity Centre for Asian Studies at Trinity College Dublin, The University of Dublin invites applications for a fully funded four-year doctoral project in Southeast Asian Studies, beginning on 1 September 2027.
This opening is designed for an interdisciplinary scholar working across the humanities, arts, and social sciences on contemporary Southeast Asia under the theme of amphibious worlding(s). The project encourages research on connected histories and present-day transformations across the region, with possible directions including transnational and transregional networks, inland and maritime connectivity, diaspora linkages, oceanic thought, and ecological crises across borders.
Another major research direction concerns translocal religiosity and indigeneity in Southeast Asia, including the continuity and discontinuity of religious texts, oral histories, and cosmological views across political and cultural change. The advert also highlights arts and transensorial praxis, inviting work on aesthetic expression, media, and artistic trajectories that travel across political boundaries.
Alongside doctoral research, the successful candidate will contribute to public engagement and knowledge exchange through a public-facing project. Examples include building or contributing to an open-access digital collection, oral history archive, or multimedia repository, or co-organising exhibitions, workshops, lecture series, or roundtables that connect academic research with wider communities in Southeast Asia and beyond.
The position is housed within Trinity Centre for Asian Studies, providing an environment focused on Asian studies and interdisciplinary inquiry.
