About this position
Central European University in Austria is offering up to five funded PhD places in Late Antique, Medieval and Early Modern Studies for the 2027/28 academic year. The four-year program is accredited in Austria and the United States and is designed for students pursuing source-based research in historical studies.
Historical Studies at CEU emphasizes interdisciplinarity and supports research across a broad geographical range, including Central Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, the United States, and central and eastern Asia. Chronological coverage extends from late antiquity to the present, with students encouraged to develop individual research projects rather than work exclusively on faculty-led projects.
Students receive training in historiography, research methodology, and relevant languages, including Latin, Ancient Greek, and Syriac. The first year is based in Vienna and includes coursework and language study. Later years may involve archival research, field trips, conference participation, teaching development through a mandatory TA-ship, and dissertation writing supported by CEU faculty and the PhD community.
Funding includes a full tuition waiver, a monthly stipend, and a research allowance currently set at EUR 5,200 for the duration of the program. Awardees also receive dedicated PhD office space and opportunities to participate in academic events, conferences, workshops, and international research collaborations.
Applicants must provide two letters of recommendation, an English research proposal, and an English writing sample through the CEU application portal by January 15, 2027. Applicants are encouraged to contact faculty members to discuss project fit. Questions may be directed to PhD Coordinator Dr. Margaretha Boockmann at [email protected].
