About this position
This fully funded PhD scholarship is based at the School of Education and Culture in the Faculty of Education at Monash University’s Clayton campus. The project sits within an Australian Research Council–funded study, Hitting the Limits: Intersectional sexisms in Australian universities, and invites the successful candidate to develop a research project aligned with questions about where LGBTIQA+ academics are located across disciplines and geography, how welcome they feel in their workplaces, and what private and professional support strategies they draw upon.
The scholarship places the student within a research team working across Australia on how gender, power, intersectionality, and complexity shape university cultures. The advertised project is centered on the experiences of LGBTIQA+ academic staff and the institutional conditions that influence belonging, support, and social cohesion in Australian universities. It offers the chance to contribute to theoretically and practically significant research on higher education environments, with a focus on lived experience, institutional location, and the culture of universities.
The student will work alongside principal supervisor Associate Professor Emily M. Gray and associate supervisors Professor Jacqueline Ullman and Associate Professor Lucy Nicholas. The wider setting is Monash’s Faculty of Education, described as a strong research community and one of Australia’s top-ranked education faculties, providing opportunities to connect with students and leading experts internationally.
The position is a research-based PhD scholarship within a collaborative project on intersectional sexisms in Australian universities.
