About this position

The Freshwater and Estuarine Research Group is seeking students for upcoming projects in environmental science, ecology, microbiology, biotechnology, and related areas. Two projects are highlighted: (1) an Australian Research Council-funded study on using macrophytes to control algal blooms through nature-based solutions, and (2) a project on microbial threats and management actions in the Upper Murrumbidgee River, including drivers of blooms, contamination sources, catchment processes, flow conditions, nutrient dynamics, remote sensing, lab work, and field work.

Supervision is by Dr Jordan Facey, Dr James Hitchcock, and Prof Simon Mitrovic.

Eligibility: BSc (Honours) or equivalent in a relevant field; candidates without honours but with relevant experience may be considered for Masters. Experience in field work, teamwork, statistical analysis, and handling large data sets is preferred. Only domestic students (permanent Australian residents or New Zealand citizens) can apply.

Funding: stipend of $39,000-$50,000 per year. Honours research enquiries are also welcome, with $5,000 honours stipends available.

How to apply: email your CV, an academic writing sample, and a short cover letter to [email protected]. The final deadline is 1 September 2026, but applications are encouraged as soon as possible because positions will be filled when suitable candidates are found.
