About this position
Fondazione Bruno Kessler is offering a PhD position on Modeling and Simulation of Urban Digital Twins in Trento, Italy. The project sits at the intersection of urban informatics, modeling and simulation, data science, and artificial intelligence, with a strong focus on building analytical methods for complex city-scale systems.
An urban digital twin is described as a dynamic digital model of a city, continuously fed by real-world data and designed to reproduce city behaviour. In this project, the PhD candidate will work on advanced modeling and simulation frameworks that can capture the complexity of cities as systems-of-systems, including interactions among physical, organisational, and social dimensions, and the interface between the physical and digital worlds.
The research contribution is twofold: first, to develop a novel framework of analytical methods for modeling and simulation within urban digital twins; second, to validate the proposed framework on real-world scenarios, particularly the adoption of digital twin approaches by Italian cities. The topic is highly relevant to urban transition, climate adaptation, and policy evaluation, where reliable prediction tools are increasingly important.
Preferred candidates hold a Master degree or equivalent in Computer/Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Communication Engineering, or a related field. The call also highlights useful experience or knowledge in artificial intelligence, statistical and machine learning, complex systems, and agent-based modeling and simulation.
This is a full-time temporary PhD position. The application deadline is 27 August 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Rome), and the intended starting date is 1 November 2026. Interested applicants should apply through the official FBK PhD call webpage linked in the posting.
