About this position
Macquarie University, in partnership with the Northern Sydney Local Health District and the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI), is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship focused on creating climate-resilient healthcare systems. This unique program aims to catalyse performance improvement in healthcare services by integrating climate action, health systems research, and real-world impact. Research areas include developing low-carbon healthcare systems, reducing the environmental and carbon footprint of healthcare, implementation science, planetary health, and protecting vulnerable populations from climate change impacts. The program also aligns healthcare practices with Net Zero targets.
Successful candidates will join a multidisciplinary team of researchers, clinicians, and policymakers, working collaboratively to advance research on climate-resilient and low-carbon healthcare systems. The scholarship supports national and international efforts to decarbonise healthcare and develop evidence-based strategies for reducing environmental impact. Potential research topics include evaluating planetary health frameworks, investigating climate change impacts on vulnerable populations, assessing interventions to reduce healthcare’s carbon footprint, and exploring policies that align healthcare with Net Zero goals.
The scholarship offers full tuition coverage and a living allowance stipend of $42,000 per annum for three years, with the possibility of a paid, part-time research support position. Students will have access to world-class research facilities, expert mentorship, and opportunities for collaboration across Australian and international health organisations. The program is designed to help students build a strong professional profile through publications, conference presentations, and impactful research.
Applicants should have a strong background in health services research, climate change research, implementation science, organisational behavioural change, psychology, the humanities, or consumer and community involvement in research. The opportunity is open to eligible candidates for direct entry into a three-year PhD program. Applications close on 30 April 2026. For more information or to apply, candidates are encouraged to contact Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite or Dr K-lynn Smith and visit the Macquarie University scholarship portal.
