About this position
BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, Norway is inviting applications for a four-year PhD scholarship in Communication within the EMANAIRE project, “Leader Legitimacy in Augmented Leadership.” This doctoral project sits at the intersection of communication, leadership, organizational behavior, artificial intelligence, legitimacy, authority, and responsible AI.
The project examines how AI changes leadership work and how leaders build, lose, and regain legitimacy when decision-making, monitoring, coordination, and communication are increasingly AI-supported. Research topics include leader-employee-AI triads, critical incidents involving AI-supported decisions, the boundary between AI-augmented leadership and algorithmic management, leader identity and responsibility, and interventions that help leaders use AI while maintaining independent judgement and accountability.
The successful candidate will join BI’s doctoral programme and the wider EMANAIRE network, which brings together doctoral candidates across European universities to study how AI is changing work. The network includes training activities, research seminars, residential schools, practitioner engagement, a six-month intersectoral secondment, and an academic mobility visit.
Funding: NOK 623,200 gross per year, with pension membership and 25% teaching time. The scholarship is subject to MSCA eligibility rules, including the mobility rule and the requirement that applicants do not already hold a doctoral degree.
Eligibility: Applicants should hold, or complete by the start date, a relevant MSc, research master’s/M.Phil., or comparable degree with thesis work. Relevant backgrounds include communication, media studies, human-computer interaction, information systems, sociology, psychology, management, organizational behavior, HRM, law and technology, STS, political science, and related fields. An MBA is not accepted. Strong English skills are required; IELTS/TOEFL may be waived if documentation is approved.

What's required
Applicants must have completed, or complete by the start date, a Master of Science degree with thesis work, a research master's/M.Phil. degree, or a comparable degree relevant to the PhD specialisation in Communication. Relevant backgrounds include communication, media studies, human-computer interaction, information systems, sociology, psychology, management, organisational behaviour, human resource management, law and technology, science and technology studies, political science, or related interdisciplinary fields. An MBA does not qualify. Strong analytical and academic writing skills, interest in leadership and AI in organizations, and excellent written and spoken English are expected; fluency in German is a plus. For MSCA eligibility, the candidate must not hold a doctoral degree and must satisfy the mobility rule.
