PhD Candidate in Communications BI Norwegian Business School in Norway

The Department of Communication and Culture at BI Norwegian Business School invites applications for multiple four-year PhD scholarships in Communications, starting in August 2027. The position is based in Oslo, Norway, and is designed for talented researchers who want to develop an international academic career through high-quality research and publications.

Applicants are free to propose their own research project, provided it fits broadly within the department’s research interests. The department is home to around 50 faculty members and is strongly international in profile, research activity, and industry collaboration. Current research themes include the role of the arts in digital transformation, structural change in the creative industries, communication technologies and the future of work, new forms of labour and organizations, online organizing and communities, the social legitimacy of technological transformations, and innovation in education management.

The department hosts research groups in Internet and Society, Corporate Communication, Creative Industries, and Education Management. Faculty publish regularly in leading journals across management, organization, work, communication, and business ethics. The opportunity is therefore well suited to candidates interested in communication studies, organizational and management-related research, digital media, cultural industries, and the societal effects of technology.

The scholarships are currently valued at NOK 623,200 per year (subject to adjustment in 2027). The position includes membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and carries a teaching component equivalent to 25% of a full-time professor position. Accepted candidates will receive close supervision and follow-up by research faculty at BI.

Eligibility requires a completed Master of Science with thesis work, a research master’s/M.Phil., or a comparable degree relevant to Communication by early summer 2027. Relevant backgrounds include management, communication studies, political sciences, psychology, sociology, and philosophy. An MBA does not satisfy the requirement. Final-year MSc students are encouraged to apply.
