About this position
BI Norwegian Business School’s Department of Communication and Culture is inviting applications for a four-year PhD scholarship in the EMANAIRE project, Managing Team Communication in AI-Augmented Teams.
This doctoral project examines how delegating drafting, analysis, and coordination to AI changes leadership, team dynamics, communication quality, and collaboration. The research focuses on AI overreliance, disclosure of AI use, patterns of AI-supported communication, beliefs and mindsets about digital teamwork, and the managerial and personal resources that help employees adapt while maintaining critical thinking. The project aims to develop and validate quantitative measures and may combine measurement development with field or team studies.
The position is part of EMANAIRE, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network with 15 doctoral candidates across nine European universities studying how AI is changing work. The network includes supervision across institutions, residential schools, methods workshops, monthly seminars, practitioner engagement, and a six-month intersectoral secondment.
Applicants should have, or complete by the start date, a relevant MSc, research master’s/M.Phil., or comparable degree. Suitable backgrounds include communication, media studies, human-computer interaction, information systems, sociology, psychology, management, organisational behaviour, human resource management, law and technology, science and technology studies, political science, and related interdisciplinary fields. An MBA does not qualify. Strong quantitative or mixed-methods skills, experience with surveys/experiments/field studies/team research/psychometrics, and strong academic writing are advantageous.
The scholarship is currently NOK 623,200 gross per year, with pension membership and 25% teaching time. The workplace is BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, Norway. Applicants who do not hold a qualifying Nordic degree and whose degree was not taught in English normally need TOEFL or IELTS, unless a waiver is granted.

Applicants must have completed, or complete by the start date, a Master of Science degree with thesis work, a research master's/M.Phil. degree, or a comparable degree relevant to the PhD specialisation in Communication. Relevant backgrounds include communication, media studies, human-computer interaction, information systems, sociology, psychology, management, organisational behaviour, human resource management, law and technology, science and technology studies, political science, or related social-science and interdisciplinary fields. An MBA does not meet the admission requirements. Preferred qualities include strong interest in team dynamics and AI-supported communication, strong quantitative or mixed-methods skills, experience with surveys, experiments, field studies, team research or psychometric analysis, ability to connect individual/leader/team-level processes, strong academic writing, and interest in research-practice collaboration. Non-Nordic applicants whose qualifying degree was not taught in English normally need TOEFL or IELTS unless a waiver is granted. MSCA eligibility also requires no doctoral degree and compliance with the mobility rule.
