About this position

PhD opportunity at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), BarcelonaTECH, in Terrassa, Spain. The project, titled Distributed and centralized data mining for WDS in the context of IoT and Big data, focuses on water distribution systems, IoT, big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning, distributed computing, and hydraulic modelling.

The doctoral candidate will work on three connected research themes: AI-based distributed data validation and reconstruction at the edge/sensor level; heterogeneous IoT data analytics across SCADA, laboratory analytics, maintenance logs, and external sources; and integration of distributed and centralized approaches into a hybrid platform. The work aims to improve water network management through robust data handling, live IoT-stream integration, and synergy between edge intelligence and cloud analytics.

Expected outputs include a software framework for distributed WDS data collection and validation, an integration tool linking live IoT data with hydraulic simulation models such as EPANET, and a hybrid architecture combining decentralized storage with centralized model management.

Eligibility: applicants should hold an outstanding Master’s degree or equivalent in Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, AI/Machine Learning, Telecommunications Engineering, Applied Mathematics/Physics, or a related computational field. Strong Python or R skills are required, together with a solid background in machine learning and deep learning. Experience with IoT protocols, data integration pipelines, heterogeneous datasets, and water network modelling is desirable; distributed computing and decentralized databases are a plus. English at C1 level is required, while Spanish or Catalan will be considered.

Funding and contract: this is a scholarship/assistantship-style doctoral position with a full-time fixed-term contract (37.5 hours/week).

Deadline: 15 September 2026.

How to apply: submit your application via the UPC recruitment portal. The post also links to the EURAXESS vacancy for reference.
