About this position
This UNSW Scientia PhD project investigates federated artificial intelligence for standardising head and neck radiotherapy data and modelling contour variation across hospitals.
The research will use large, diverse and international radiotherapy imaging, anatomical structure and radiation-dose datasets to examine differences in clinical practice and develop AI models for more personalised cancer treatment. The project focuses on federated learning, allowing raw data to remain at local institutions while model parameters are exchanged to build collaborative models across sites.
The doctoral researcher will work with head and neck radiotherapy datasets through the Australian Cancer Data Network and collaborate with Odense University Hospital in Denmark, a partner of the internationally leading DAHANCA head and neck radiotherapy group. The work will develop federated learning approaches to standardise retrospective datasets and assess variation between institutions and patients.
A further component involves adapting auto-segmentation models to incorporate accepted contour variation. This will support robust modelling aimed at improving patient outcomes and reducing treatment side effects. The supervisory team comprises Professor Lois Holloway as primary supervisor, Professor Arcot Sowmya as co-supervisor, and Dr Fahim Irfan Alam as co-supervisor at the University of New South Wales, within the Faculty of Medicine & Health’s School of Clinical Medicine.
The project offers a collaborative research environment spanning Australian and Danish radiotherapy data and clinical research partners.
