About this position
A UNSW Scientia PhD Scholarship is available in the School of Chemistry at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney), Australia, for research on AI-guided molecular recognition.
The project combines native mass spectrometry, robotic chemistry and artificial intelligence to develop faster and more informative methods for discovering and characterising molecules that bind to proteins. The successful PhD researcher will contribute to multiplexed, multistage mass spectrometry, automated sample preparation, robotic experimentation and AI-guided experimental design.
This interdisciplinary project spans analytical chemistry, organic synthesis and computational science. The supervisory team includes Professors William A. Donald, Vinh Nguyen and Tiffany Walsh at UNSW, together with Professor Claudiu T. Supuran at the University of Florence, Italy. Research placements at the University of Florence may be available.
The scholarship is open to domestic applicants who hold a Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering with first-class Honours, a research Master’s degree with substantial research experience, or an equivalent qualification assessed by the Faculty Higher Degree Committee. Funding includes a $39,991 annual stipend for 3.5 years and a one-off $25,000 Global Mobility Grant.
To express interest, email Professor William Donald with a CV, official transcripts, a brief background and suitability statement, and an explanation of your interest in the project and supervisors’ expertise. Candidates supported by the primary supervisor will then be invited to submit a formal UNSW application.
