About this position

Edith Cowan University is advertising a VCPRF HDR Scholarship for a PhD project on injury prevention, climate adaptation, and public health. The project title is Assessing organisational preparedness and adaptation to climate-related health and injury risks in outdoor activity settings: a Western Australian case study.

The research will use Western Australia as a case study to examine how organisations govern common climate hazards such as heat, humidity, UV exposure, flooding, and extreme weather. The work focuses on sectors including active recreation, leisure, sport, festivals, and tourism, with aims to map risks, identify adaptation responses, evaluate implementation and governance, and develop an evidence-based framework for climate-resilient injury prevention and public health practice.

Eligibility is for domestic candidates or those with the right to work and study in Australia. Applicants should have evidence of research ability through a strong honours degree or a Masters with a substantial research component. Helpful backgrounds include public health, injury prevention, sport and recreation, environmental health, sustainability, policy, tourism, or related fields. Experience in qualitative research, stakeholder engagement, program evaluation, implementation science, or organisational research is advantageous.

The scholarship is for full-time candidature with an expected completion time of 3-4 years. Enrolment will be at ECU’s Joondalup Campus, and the candidate must be able to meet the supervisory panel face-to-face there.

To apply, interested applicants should first contact the principal supervisor, Professor Caroline Finch AO, to discuss suitability. Then send a CV and a 1-page statement explaining why the project suits you and which aspect of the research you would like to pursue to [email protected].
