About this position

The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Construct is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship in Data Driven Modelling, Characterization and Optimization of Dry Forming of Natural Fiber Materials. This position is part of the Marie Skłodowska Curie (MSCA) Doctoral Network Programme, ENDURE, which brings together leading universities, research organizations, and industry partners across Europe to advance sustainable manufacturing and materials research.

The research focuses on developing and experimentally validating data-driven models for high-speed dry thermoforming processes using natural fiber materials. The project aims to enable efficient and sustainable production of packaging components for food and beverage applications. Key activities include the characterization of airlaid and fluff pulp forming processes (utilizing X-ray tomography), development of physics-supported modelling tools that account for fiber network characteristics and distribution, and optimization of thermoforming processes. The work will combine theoretical and experimental approaches, leveraging both existing and newly developed equipment to generate data, produce test parts, and implement closed loop control. Industrial validation will be conducted in collaboration with partner companies.

As a PhD student, you will join a cohort of 15 researchers working on related topics within the domain of natural fiber materials. You are expected to position your scientific work within current literature, publish findings in peer-reviewed journals, and present at international conferences. The working language is English, and the position offers a stimulating international environment with opportunities for academic and professional development.

Eligibility requirements include completion of a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in Mechanical, Production, Materials, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or an equivalent academic level. Candidates must not have a doctoral degree at the time of recruitment and must comply with MSCA mobility rules (not have resided or carried out their main activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the last 36 months). Strong academic background in production engineering or related fields, knowledge of manufacturing systems, natural fiber materials, paper production, experience with manufacturing metrology and programming tools such as MATLAB, familiarity with machine learning techniques, and good analytical and communication skills in English are required.

The scholarship is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of DTU's general degree programmes. The appointment is based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations, with salary and allowance agreed with the relevant union. The employment period is 3 years. DTU is globally recognized for research excellence and offers a rewarding and challenging job in an inclusive, international environment.

Applications must be submitted online by 31 May 2026. Prepare a single PDF file including your cover letter, CV, grade transcripts, diploma, and outline of relevant projects. For further information, contact Associate Professor Giuliano Bissacco ([email protected]). Additional details about the department and the ENDURE project can be found at DTU Construct and ENDURE.

DTU encourages applications from all qualified candidates regardless of age, gender, disability, race, religion, or ethnic background. The university offers support for international applicants, including monthly seminars on relocation and practical matters.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
