About this position

PhD opportunity at The University of Manchester in the Department of Computer Science / School of Engineering on neuromorphic computing using quantum magnetic sensors for skyrmion detection.

This experimental project sits at the intersection of physics, electrical engineering, materials science, computer science, and quantum computing. The research focuses on detecting magnetic skyrmions using quantum magnetic sensors (MTJs), with work on magnetic thin films, multilayer structures, device fabrication, and magnetic/electrical characterization. The project also explores applications in neuromorphic computing and data storage.

Students will have access to advanced magnetism and nanodevice facilities in Manchester, including sputter deposition, X-ray and AFM structural characterization, and nanofabrication tools. There may also be opportunities to compare MTJs with advanced spin Hall sensors and to collaborate with laboratories across Europe.

Funding: competition-funded PhD project. Funding covers tuition fees, the UKRI minimum annual stipend (currently £21,805/year), and up to £2.5k/year research training support grant for the full 3.5-year programme. Self-funded or externally funded students may also be considered.

Eligibility: applicants should normally hold a 2:1 honours degree (or international equivalent) in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science, or a 2:1 honours degree plus a Master’s degree at merit (or equivalent) in one of those subjects.

Deadline: applications are accepted all year round and the project remains open until filled. The page notes decision points for applications submitted by 1 November 2026 and 15 January 2027.

How to apply: contact the supervisors before applying, then submit a formal application through the university’s online portal. You will need the project title, supervisor names, study history, two referees, a supporting statement, CV, and transcripts.
