About this position

PhD scholarship at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in the BRIGHT mission-oriented microbial food programme, focused on nutritional enhancement of microbial foods.

The project sits at the interface of molecular nutrition, strain engineering, microbial engineering, fermentation, and food science. The successful candidate will work with the fungal chassis Aspergillus and Yarrowia to improve rate-limiting nutritional features such as protein bioavailability, essential amino acids, and selected vitamins, while preserving taste, texture, and process performance.

Research activities include identifying nutritional bottlenecks from characterization data, designing strain-engineering strategies, engineering strains, coordinating with protein chemistry and in vitro digestion workstreams, and contributing to predictive models linking strain/process design to nutritional outcomes. The broader BRIGHT programme uses multi-omics, sensory analysis, life-cycle assessment, safety testing, and active learning to develop an AI-powered framework for rational design of microbial foods.

Eligibility: a two-year Master's degree (120 ECTS) in molecular biology, biotechnology, microbiology, nutrition science, or a closely related field (or equivalent). Strong organization and project management skills, fluency in English, and literacy in common IT systems and AI are required. Experience with molecular biology techniques and, ideally, genetic engineering of filamentous fungi or yeast is preferred.

Funding and terms: PhD scholarship, full-time for 3 years, with salary/allowance under the Danish collective agreement. Start date is 1 January 2027 or by mutual agreement.

Location: Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark, at DTU / BRIGHT.

Application deadline: 27 September 2026, 23:59 Danish time. Apply online and submit one PDF containing the cover letter, CV, transcripts, diploma, and one reference letter.
