About this position

PhD opportunity at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in advanced micromanufacturing, polymer processing, and data-driven process modelling.

This PhD scholarship focuses on the integration of micro 3D printing (µ3DP) and micro injection moulding (µIM) into a unified, fully digital micromanufacturing process chain for the production of thermoplastic microfluidic systems for diagnostics. The project sits within DTU Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Section of Manufacturing Engineering, and aligns with the broader goal of developing resilient and sustainable production technologies for healthcare and biomedical applications.

The research is part of the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network “MicroMan4Health”, a European collaboration aimed at data-centric micromanufacturing for the health sector. The work combines experimental polymer processing, material characterisation, simulation, in-situ process monitoring, optical quality control, uncertainty quantification, and data-driven optimisation. A major objective is to create digital dataflows between µ3DP, µIM, simulation tools, and monitoring systems, enabling a digital twin approach for micro manufacturing.

The successful candidate will develop process chains that support high-precision polymer soft tooling and real-time process monitoring, and will help formulate Design for Micromanufacturing rules. The position also involves close collaboration with industrial and academic partners across Europe, with the aim of translating laboratory findings into demonstrable industrial solutions.

Eligibility highlights: a two-year master’s degree in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, polymer engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a closely related field; experience in laboratory work and data analysis; interest in numerical simulation and/or process modelling; and excellent English communication skills. Because the position is funded by MSCA, the mobility rule applies: applicants must not have lived or carried out their main activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment.
