About this position
This PhD scholarship at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of advanced control algorithms for real-time control and process optimisation of drainage pipe networks. The project aims to enhance the operational efficiency of urban wastewater systems, reduce energy consumption, and extend the service life of infrastructure. As a scholarship recipient, you will join a team of leading researchers and undertake innovative research across several interdisciplinary fields.
The research will focus on real-time data analysis and modeling, dynamic prediction and state identification of pipeline networks, optimisation algorithm and high-performance computing development, as well as network security, communication, and collaborative control. The project is designed to address key challenges in urban wastewater management, making a significant impact on sustainability and infrastructure longevity.
Funding for this position includes a generous stipend of $37,010 per annum (tax-exempt, indexed annually) for up to 3.5 years, with the possibility of a six-month extension if approved. Additionally, a tuition fee offset/sponsorship is provided, covering tuition fees for the first four full-time equivalent years of doctoral studies. This comprehensive funding package ensures that you can focus on your research without financial concerns.
Eligibility requirements include meeting the entry criteria for a QUT Doctor of Philosophy, including English language requirements, and enrolling as a full-time, internal student (unless approval for part-time or external study is obtained). Applicants should have a background in control engineering, computer science, municipal and environmental engineering, or a related field. Desirable qualities include strong problem-solving and self-learning abilities, a demonstrated research interest, teamwork skills, and research article publication.
To apply, first email Dr Jiuling Li with details of your academic and research background, motivation for research in this field, and your CV. If supported, you will then submit an expression of interest (EOI) for a QUT Doctor of Philosophy, nominating Dr Jiuling Li as your proposed principal supervisor and including the scholarship web page link in the financial details section. Applications close on 31 May 2026.
This scholarship is ideal for candidates passionate about real-time control, optimisation, and sustainable urban infrastructure. It provides a unique platform to develop expertise in interdisciplinary research and make a tangible impact on urban wastewater systems.
