About this position

PhD scholarship in Situational Awareness for Resilient Operation of Distribution Grids at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Wind and Energy Systems), located in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.

This PhD project focuses on electrical power systems, distribution grids, microgrids, situational awareness, resilient operation, and energy management systems. The research aims to improve the ability of distribution grids to transition to islanded operation during severe incidents, maintain supply to prioritized loads, and support faster recovery after disruptions. The project will investigate how conventional grid measurements can be combined with non-traditional information sources such as distributed energy resources and physical surveillance data to maintain an updated understanding of system state, resource availability, and network topology.

The successful candidate will develop methods for robust islanded operation in a no-single-point-of-failure architecture, devise operating strategies for changing resource situations and stability threats, and contribute to a self-representing explainable data model for coordination with grid operators and emergency procedures. The project is part of a collaboration with DTU Space and DTU Electro, and the student will work in an international research environment with opportunities to collaborate with industry and international research groups.

Eligibility highlights: a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent is required. Strong preparation in power system engineering and optimization, data science, Python, and simulation tools such as PandaPower or PowerFactory is expected. Excellent English and the ability to communicate scientific results in oral presentations and journal publications are required. The student will also assist with teaching and co-supervision of MSc and BSc students.

Funding and terms: the position is a 3-year full-time PhD scholarship with salary and appointment terms according to the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations collective agreement. No stipend amount is stated in the post.

Application window: submit the complete online application by 2026-11-04 (23:59 Danish time). Applications must be uploaded as one PDF in English containing a cover letter, CV, and transcripts plus BSc/MSc diploma with grading scale description. Assessment is ongoing and may include one or two interview stages.
