About this position
PhD scholarship opportunity in stable isotope biogeochemistry, Quaternary paleoecology, and geology at the Institute of Geological Sciences, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland.
The project, titled “Variability of carbon and nitrogen isotopic baselines in Quaternary terrestrial ecosystems” (acronym: Isobase), investigates δ13C and δ15N baseline variability in modern and fossil terrestrial temperate ecosystems. The research combines plant and herbivore isotope analyses, bone collagen studies, protein/cellulose/lignin extraction, GC-related derivatisation, and interpretation of isotopic fluxes in ecosystems such as the Białowieża Forest and fossil assemblages from Polish cave sites.
The successful candidate will join the GeoPlanet Doctoral School and work under the supervision of Dr hab. Maciej T. Krajcarz in the Quaternary GeoEcology Research Group. The role includes laboratory sample preparation, isotope data analysis, manuscript preparation, conference abstracts, reports, and presentations at international conferences. Training and conference travel are included, but relocation, accommodation, and living expenses are not covered.
Funding is provided as an NCN scientific scholarship for 48 months: PLN 5,000 brutto brutto/month for the first 2 years and PLN 6,500 brutto brutto/month for the remaining 2 years, subject to a positive mid-term evaluation.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Earth/environmental sciences, chemistry, biology, or a related field, have laboratory experience, strong organisational and analytical skills, fluent English, and a strong interest in Quaternary paleoecology and biogeochemical analyses. Experience with stable isotope analyses and R is an advantage.
To apply, send a single PDF containing the required doctoral school documents to [email protected] and [email protected], and include “Isobase” in the email subject. Deadline: 30 September 2026, 16:00 (Europe/Brussels).
