The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Space invites applications for a three-year, full-time PhD scholarship on physics-informed machine learning for Greenland’s firn tipping point. The position is based at the Cryosphere Research Group, Geodesy and Earth Observation Division, DTU Space, in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark. The project will investigate when Greenland’s porous near-surface firn layer may lose its capacity to store meltwater and what this could mean for sea-level rise. The PhD researcher ...

[Fees and a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7.] PhD studentship at the University of Exeter on physics-informed AI and experimental modelling of ocean mixing , focusing on how fracture zones connect deep-ocean mixing, tracer transport, abyssal upwelling, and large-scale ocean ventilation. The project addresses a major climate-science challenge: how small-scale turbulent mixing in the deep ocean shapes basin-scale overturning circulation and the transport of heat, carbon, and nutrients. It ...

About this position

PhD scholarship in the use of SWOT for small-scale ocean processes at DTU Space, Technical University of Denmark in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.

This PhD project focuses on ocean modelling, remote sensing, satellite altimetry, SWOT observations (Surface Water and Ocean Topography), and scientific machine learning. The research aims to assimilate SWOT sea-surface height observations into a high-resolution ocean model with a focus on the Polar Regions, improving understanding of small-scale ocean processes, ocean circulation, freshwater distribution, and the ocean response to climate change. A key part of the project is developing surrogate models to reduce computational cost and enable efficient prediction and exploration of ocean dynamics.

The position is hosted at DTU Space, within the Hydro group in the Geodesy and Earth Observation Division, with collaboration across DTU departments and international partners. The main assessor/supervisor mentioned is Professor Ole B. Andersen ([email protected]), who is expected to be the main supervisor, with a co-supervisor also involved.

Eligibility: applicants must hold a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or an equivalent degree. A background in ocean modelling and remote sensing is expected, preferably with experience in satellite altimetry and MITgcm. The candidate should be comfortable working in an international research environment and participating in research travel.

Funding: this is a PhD scholarship with a 3-year employment period under DTU salary and appointment terms. No stipend amount is stated in the post.

Deadline: submit the complete online application by 2026-11-05 (5 November 2026, 23:59 Danish time).

How to apply: use the DTU Apply now portal and upload one PDF containing a motivation letter, CV, and English transcripts plus BSc/MSc diploma with grading scale description. Applications after the deadline will not be considered.
