About this position
This PhD scholarship is offered as part of the Monash Initiative for Rapid Research into Antisemitism, based at Monash University’s Caulfield campus in Melbourne. The Initiative, led by Associate Professor David Slucki, supports rigorous, policy-relevant, and publicly engaged research on antisemitism in Australia. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research culture within the Faculty of Arts and contribute to both the Initiative’s shared activities and their own distinct PhD thesis.
The scholarship is open to candidates interested in exploring antisemitism through social science, media and communications, or other relevant interdisciplinary approaches. Research directions may include antisemitism in news media, online platforms, and public discourse; public attitudes and social dynamics; lived experience and community responses; education and prevention; policy and governance; intersections with misinformation and extremism; and comparative projects across communities or countries. Methodological flexibility is encouraged, with qualitative, quantitative, mixed, or interdisciplinary methods all welcome.
Benefits of undertaking this PhD within the Initiative include integration into an active research agenda, expert supervision, and access to support for data collection, fieldwork, transcription, travel, and conference attendance. Candidates will have opportunities to contribute to publications, workshops, and public-facing engagement activities, with appropriate recognition for their contributions.
Monash University is Australia’s largest university and consistently ranks among the world’s top 100. The Caulfield campus offers a strong and supportive research environment, particularly within the Faculty of Arts.
Applicants must have an excellent academic record in a relevant field such as sociology, politics, media/communications, social psychology, criminology, education, anthropology, public policy, human geography, or related interdisciplinary areas. Priority is given to those with an Honours or Master’s degree (with significant research component and first-class honours/H1 or equivalent). Desirable skills include training in qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods, interest in antisemitism studies and related fields, experience with media analysis, interviewing/fieldwork, survey research, computational methods, or policy analysis, and strong writing and communication skills. English language proficiency requirements apply as per Faculty of Arts guidelines. Applicants who already hold a PhD are not eligible. Scholarship holders must be enrolled full-time and on campus.
The scholarship provides a Research Living Allowance of $37,145 AUD per annum (2026 full-time rate, tax-free stipend), indexed plus allowances as per RTP stipend scholarship conditions. Additional support is available for research-related expenses.
To apply, candidates must first discuss their research proposal with Associate Professor David Slucki. The Expression of Interest should include a cover letter, brief research proposal (max 750 words), CV, academic records, English language proficiency test results (if applicable), names of two academic referees, and a copy of your passport (if available). Applications close on Sunday 10th May 2026, 11:59 pm AEST.
