About this position
PhD scholarship opportunity in Materials Science and Engineering: NOₓ production by plasma bubble reactor at Monash University is an industry-focused doctoral project delivered through CSIRO’s Industry PhD (iPhD) Program. The project brings together Monash University, CSIRO, and an industry partner to co-develop a four-year research program based at CSIRO Clayton in Victoria.
The research explores a plasma bubble reactor that injects tiny plasma-filled bubbles into water to produce nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) directly from air. The project focuses on how the small bubbles create a large contact area, enabling efficient operation at room temperature and without fossil fuels. A major motivation is the role of NOₓ as a building block for green ammonia, linking the work to clean fuel and fertiliser production and to decentralized, renewable-powered applications.
The student will work across plasma science, reactor design, chemical analysis, and renewable-energy technologies. The advert frames the project as a chance to contribute to real-world climate solutions while building skills relevant to clean energy, environmental engineering, and advanced manufacturing.
The supervisory team includes Professor Aijun Huang at Monash University and Dr Yunxia Yang at CSIRO.
The project is situated within Monash’s Faculty of Engineering and CSIRO’s research environment, with the work based at Clayton campus/CSIRO Clayton in Victoria.
