About this position
PhD studentship at the University of Warwick within WMG’s Advanced Steel Research Centre, working with the Digital Twins team on a project titled Development of a Digital Twin for Smart Sustainable Steel Section Production.
This project sits at the intersection of steel manufacturing, digital twins, finite element analysis, and machine learning. The research aims to build a through-process framework that can predict microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of steel, then use live mill data such as temperature and rolling loads to infer the current material state and recommend optimised next-stage processing. The overall goal is to help steel producers respond quickly to production conditions, improve process control, reduce reject and downgrade rates, and support energy efficiency and sustainability.
You will work closely with industry partners and real production data to combine several existing models into a cohesive digital twin architecture for steel section production. The project specifically addresses challenges facing the UK steel industry, including volatile energy and raw material costs, increasing use of scrap feedstock, tighter sustainability requirements, and the need for greater predictability across production routes.
The successful candidate will develop the architecture, robustness, and limitations of the modelling framework and support its implementation in an industrial setting. A placement with the industrial partner is included, with timing and duration to be agreed by all parties.
Funding: £21,805; funding information notes support from the DigitalMetals CDT.
Deadline: 28 February 2027.
