About this position
PhD Studentship: Engineering Fitness in Disease-Resistant Crops at the University of East Anglia.
This PhD studentship explores a major challenge in agricultural biotechnology: how to engineer crop disease resistance without compromising plant growth and yield. The project focuses on resistance to potato cyst nematodes, an important UK pest, and investigates whether programmable, tissue- and time-specific expression of resistance genes can preserve defence while reducing the growth-defence trade-off.
The research builds around the soybean resistance locus Rhg1, which can protect against nematodes but may also reduce root growth and tuber yield when expressed continuously. The project will test the hypothesis that these effects arise from uncontrolled expression in the wrong tissues or at the wrong developmental stage. Using a regulatory-part library, you will redesign Rhg1 constructs and evaluate engineered plants for disease resistance, root architecture, and tuber yield.
The project is highly collaborative and brings together expertise from the Grandellis Group at Earlham Institute and the Witek Group at 2Blades. It will be conducted at the Earlham Institute, a BBSRC research centre of excellence with strengths in genomics, engineering, computational biology, and AI, and with access to world-class automation robotics in the Earlham Biofoundry.
You will receive training in plant molecular biology, synthetic biology, engineering biology, automated DNA assembly, Biofoundry technologies, and genetic engineering. These are transferable skills valued in academia and the biotechnology sector.
This is a 4-year Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership PhD DTP studentship. Funding includes tuition fees, a stipend of £21,805 for 2026/27, and a Research Training Support Grant of £5,000 per year.
Deadline: 30 November 2026.
