About this position
The University of Birmingham is offering a fully funded PhD studentship in biomimetic foldamers as a new class of sustainable catalysts, based in the School of Chemistry in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
Foldamers are synthetic oligomers that adopt stable, bio-inspired conformations such as helices. Their solid forms have applications in materials science, supramolecular chemistry, and biological chemistry. Because foldamers are bio- and environmentally compatible and have modular, tuneable molecular properties, this project will investigate their use as sustainable catalysts for the green synthesis of functional organic molecules.
The research will combine organic chemistry synthesis, advanced analytical chemistry, and computational analysis. The project will generate novel foldamers, study their molecular and structural properties, and assess their catalytic performance. Supervision will be provided by Dr Sarah Pike and Dr Adam Michalchuk.
The studentship is fully funded through the Midlands Integrative Biosciences Training Partnership CDT. Applicants must have a 1st class degree in chemistry and should verify their eligibility, including the stated UK and EU student eligibility information, through the MIBTP website. The funding amount and detailed stipend or tuition arrangements are not specified in the advert.
Applications must be submitted by 23 November 2026 through the project-specific application page.
