About this position
PhD studentship at the University of Warwick (School of Engineering) on high-efficiency power electronics for AI data centres and net-zero grids.
The project focuses on developing medium-voltage solid-state transformer (SST) cells for hyperscale data centres and renewable-rich distribution networks. Research topics include wide-bandgap power semiconductors, high-frequency magnetics, compact and ultra-efficient magnetic links, and mitigation of electrical-thermal degradation under repetitive high-dv/dt stresses.
You will combine multi-physics finite-element modelling (ANSYS/COMSOL) with experimental validation in a high-voltage power electronics laboratory, aiming to build a scaled hardware prototype that demonstrates improved efficiency and power density.
Supervision is by Dr Jiaqi Yan and Prof. Layi Alatise within Warwick’s power electronics facilities. The studentship is based in Coventry, United Kingdom.
Funding covers UK tuition fees plus a tax-free stipend of £21,805 per year for 3.5 years. International applicants are welcome, but must fund the difference between UK and international fees.
Eligibility: a first-class or strong upper second-class degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline; hands-on experience in power electronic devices/systems or high-voltage setups; and a strong theoretical background in power electronics, power semiconductor devices, or high-voltage engineering. Desirable experience includes ANSYS/COMSOL, high-speed PCB design, and embedded DSP/FPGA control.
Apply via the University of Warwick application process using the advert’s Apply button. Candidates must meet entry criteria and obtain an unconditional offer before enrolment.
