About this position
The University of East Anglia is offering a full-time PhD studentship in Human-Referenced Colour Processing, based in the Colour & Imaging Lab in Norwich, United Kingdom. The project will investigate how human and machine vision systems perform dynamic range compression, a key stage in photographic and image-processing pipelines.
The research will compare biologically plausible architectures with modern machine-learning systems. It will build on Retinex theory, known brain physiology, and numerical image-processing algorithms to design models that better reflect human vision while using contemporary machine-learning techniques. The project will also examine why current machine-learning approaches that are not referenced to human vision can produce poor results.
Applicants should normally have at least a 2:1 degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, or another numerate discipline. The studentship is available competitively to UK applicants and includes home tuition fees plus an annual stipend for three years. The current institutional stipend is £21,805 per year, subject to any agreed inflationary uplift for 2027/28. The expected start date is 1 October 2027, and the application deadline is 24 February 2027.
