New King's Studentship

The School of Language, Literature, Music and Visual Culture (LLMVC) at the University of Aberdeen is advertising the New King's Studentship for full-time PhD study. This is an open-topic studentship for applicants whose supervisors are housed in LLMVC, making it a strong opportunity for research in language, literature, music, visual culture, and related humanities fields.

The studentship includes a fee waiver for full-time supervised study. Up to three scholarships are available, and one may be considered for international applications. Successful applicants are expected to conduct their research on campus. The school also ring-fences one studentship for applicants with a protected characteristic under the UK Equality Act 2010.

Eligibility is based on the strength of the proposed project, fit with the school’s research specialisms, and the applicant’s academic track record. Typical PhD entry requirements at Aberdeen are a Masters degree or a first/upper-second class Honours degree in an appropriate area, or an equivalent qualification. Applicants should prepare a 1000–1500 word project proposal, transcripts/certificates, and academic references.

To apply, first submit the PhD application via the University’s portal. Only applicants who have successfully applied for the PhD programme and received an offer will be considered for the scholarship. The PhD application deadline is 15 April 2026, and the scholarship application deadline is 1 May 2026. Successful applicants are expected to be notified by 19 June 2026.
