About this position
The University of East Anglia in Norwich, United Kingdom, is offering a full-time PhD studentship in machine learning-guided engineering of next-generation cancer therapeutics, starting 1 October 2027.
Supervised by Dr Amit Sachdeva, the interdisciplinary project will develop small antibody fragments designed to penetrate solid tumours more effectively than conventional full-length antibodies. The research combines machine learning-guided protein design with experimental chemical biology, synthetic biology, biotechnology, and cancer research.
The successful candidate will design antibody fragments computationally, express them in Escherichia coli, and conduct cloning, recombinant protein expression, purification, biochemical and biophysical characterisation, gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, and cell-based binding assays. Promising candidates will be equipped with non-canonical amino acids to introduce new chemical functionalities and improve targeting and therapeutic performance.
Applicants should normally have at least a 2:1 degree in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Chemistry, or a related discipline. The studentship is funded for three years for UK applicants, covering home tuition fees and providing a current annual stipend of £21,805, subject to an agreed inflationary uplift for 2027/28.
Applications must be submitted by 24 February 2027.
