About this position

The International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems at The University of Manchester is offering a PhD project on neuromorphic systems for low-latency and efficient multimodal processing, with a particular focus on speech and language technologies.

Working with Luca Peres, Oliver Rhodes, and Patrycja Strycharczuk, the doctoral researcher will investigate how brain-inspired computing approaches can transform the way machines process and understand speech. The project combines neuromorphic audio and vision sensors with novel algorithms to support efficient, low-power speech processing and language understanding.

The research brings together neuromorphic engineering and linguistics. Possible directions include fundamental neuromorphic algorithms and real-world applications such as lip-reading technologies and intelligent systems for hearing assistance. The work will also examine multimodal representations and contribute to next-generation energy-efficient intelligent technologies.

This interdisciplinary research environment connects computer science, neuromorphic systems, speech processing, language understanding, and speech science within the University of Manchester’s Department of Computer Science and the International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems.
