About this position
PhD Studentship in Parent-Infant Relationships at the University of York, Department of Health Sciences.
This fully funded PhD sits within the Family Wellbeing Team and the STRIVE programme, led by Professor Sarah Blower in partnership with colleagues from health and public health research groups. The project focus is on parent-infant relationships and related early-years constructs, with scope to investigate the quality and robustness of existing measurement tools, how tools are used in practice, novel approaches such as AI and machine learning for rating relationships, and how parent-infant relationship measures differ from parental mental health measures.
Candidates are expected to develop their own research questions and use a quantitative or mixed-methods approach. The successful student may access existing data sources including the Born in Bradford’s Better Start cohort, the E-SEE study, and clinical service data from the Me and My Baby questionnaire, with the option to propose other primary or secondary data collection.
Applicants should have at least a 2:1 degree in a relevant subject such as psychology, sociology, social sciences, health sciences, computational science, or a related area. A relevant master’s degree with quantitative modules is desirable, though not essential. An interest in early years research and in strengthening quantitative and/or mixed-methods skills is encouraged. For applicants whose first language is not English, IELTS 6.5 in each component and 7 overall is required.
Funding covers a tax-free stipend at UKRI standard rates (£21,805 p.a. for 2026/27), UK-rate tuition fees, and £3,000 research costs. Deadline: 20 November 2026 at 4pm. Interview date: 1 December 2026 (TBC). Start date: ideally January 2027, no later than March 2027.
