About this position
Newcastle University is offering a 3.5-year PhD studentship investigating the establishment and efficacy of the rust fungus Puccinia komarovii as a biological control agent for invasive Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) in riparian ecosystems.
The project will assess how environmental conditions affect rust fungus infection success across invaded sites. Working with CABI, Tweed Forum and Tees Rivers Trusts, the researcher will collate existing monitoring data, conduct detailed field assessments, map topographical features, catalogue site flora using botanical survey methods, and model the spatial spread and control effects of the fungus.
This Biology and Environmental Science PhD is suited to applicants interested in invasive plant ecology, fungal biocontrol, spatial ecology, ecological modelling, fieldwork and environmental monitoring. The results will support evidence-based guidance on suitable release sites and improved monitoring requirements.
The award starts on 4 January 2027 and provides 100% Home-rate fee coverage, a minimum tax-free living allowance of £21,805 for 2026/27, and additional research funds. Applicants need at least a 2:1 Honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant subject, together with strong analytical, communication and independent research skills. Applications must be submitted by 20 November 2026 through the Apply to Newcastle Portal using programme code 8020F and studentship code SNES318.
