About this position
This PhD project will develop advanced terahertz spectroscopy methods for the inspection and optimisation of next-generation solid-state batteries. The research addresses a major manufacturing challenge: controlling the microstructure of solid-state electrolytes so that they deliver strong electrochemical performance, mechanical integrity and impermeability at product scale.
Solid-state electrolytes offer improved thermal stability, reduced flammability, enhanced durability and the potential for higher energy density. However, rapid methods for assessing microstructural homogeneity are still limited. The project will investigate how emerging terahertz measurement techniques can provide effective inspection and quality-control capabilities for high-performance electrolyte materials.
The researcher will join an interdisciplinary team working across metrology, battery materials and ceramic processing. Initial work will involve fabricating and characterising conventional electrolyte materials using terahertz spectroscopy. The project will then extend the technique to measurements of product-scale electrolytes, with later research integrating thermal control to investigate intrinsic conduction behaviour.
A key scientific goal is to connect microstructure with transport mechanisms across different length scales, establishing a unified framework for understanding conduction in solid-state electrolytes. In collaboration with LiNa Energy, the project offers direct exposure to solid-state battery manufacturing, advanced metrology and the development of energy-storage technologies for applications including electric vehicles and grid-scale storage.
