About this position
The University of East Anglia in Norwich, United Kingdom, is offering a full-time PhD studentship in ultrafast spectroscopy with structured light, supervised by Dr Kayn Forbes. The project begins on 1 October 2027 and explores how specially designed light fields can reveal molecular and material dynamics beyond the reach of conventional spectroscopy.
The research will combine pump–probe spectroscopy, structured-light photonics, analytical theory, and computational modelling. It will investigate ultrafast energy flow, electron motion, molecular excitations, and excited-state dynamics on femtosecond timescales, with potential applications in solar-energy conversion, photocatalysis, optoelectronics, and emerging quantum materials. The work may extend from pump–probe measurements to multidimensional methods such as 2D electronic spectroscopy.
The student will predict experimentally observable structured-light signatures and collaborate closely with experimental research groups to guide and potentially validate measurements in realistic molecular and material systems. Prior experience with ultrafast or 2D spectroscopy is not required; relevant techniques will be developed during the PhD.
Applicants should normally have at least a 2:1 degree in Chemistry, Physics, or Mathematics. The studentship is available to UK applicants and provides home tuition fees plus an annual stipend for three years. The current stipend is £21,805, subject to any agreed inflationary uplift for 2027/28. The application deadline is 24 February 2027.
