About this position
University of Exeter is offering a 3.5-year PhD studentship in Quantum Information with Mechanical Systems (QuIMS) focused on modelling nonlinear quantum optomechanical devices. The project investigates whether suspended graphene resonators integrated with superconducting microwave cavities can serve as a platform for quantum information processing and quantum-enhanced sensing.
The research centres on the nonlinear (quadratic) optomechanical interaction needed to prepare mechanical states that cannot be described classically. Such states may be useful for enhanced force and mass sensing, long-lived quantum memories, and mechanically encoded quantum information. The successful student will develop analytical and numerical models of device dynamics, exploring how resonator geometry, phononic-crystal design, electrical control, quality factors, and linear and quadratic coupling strengths affect performance.
Key practical issues to be studied include parasitic linear coupling, multimode interference, heating, dissipation and decoherence. The work will identify experimentally achievable operating regimes and translate theoretical results into design rules and fabrication tolerances. The student will also investigate protocols for preparing, controlling and measuring non-classical mechanical states, with applications in quantum sensing and quantum information processing.
This project is embedded within the EPSRC-funded Quantum Information with Mechanical Systems programme. The student will work closely with quantum theorists, graphene-device researchers and low-temperature experimental physicists, and the modelling results will inform device development at Exeter and be compared with fabrication, characterisation and cryogenic-measurement results across the collaboration.
The main contribution will be computational, and previous nanofabrication experience is not required. The project will provide interdisciplinary training in graphene nanodevices, superconducting circuits and low-temperature quantum measurement. Expected outcomes include research software, design principles for experiments, conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications and a doctoral thesis.
Funding: The studentship provides fees plus a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7.
Deadline: 08 December 2026.
