About this position

Postdoctoral scholarship in Statistics at Umeå University, Sweden. The Department of Statistics at Umeå University (Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics) is offering 1–2 postdoctoral scholarships for two years in the project Next-Generation Latent Variable Models for Social Data Science.

The research is centered on statistics, mathematical statistics, and related quantitative methods, with a strong emphasis on latent variable models, statistical methodology for large-scale and register-based data, text and quantitative information integration, change-point/measurement-shift modeling, and scalable inference for high-dimensional settings. The postdoc will join an international research environment including Stat4Reg and the Umeå SIMSAM Lab, with collaborations across Europe, North and South America, and Asia.

Eligibility: applicants must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent by the decision date. Preference is given to candidates who completed the PhD within the last three years, though later completion may be accepted for special reasons. The doctorate should be in statistics, mathematical statistics, mathematics, computer science, or another relevant quantitative discipline. Strong statistical modelling and inference skills, experience developing new methodology, very good programming skills, and good English are required.

Preferred background: experience with latent variable models, change-point methods, text analysis, scalable statistical inference, and peer-reviewed statistical publications.

Funding and duration: full-time postdoctoral scholarship for two years, starting 1 January 2027 or by agreement. No stipend amount is stated in the post.

How to apply: submit a personal letter, a research plan (max 3 pages, in English), CV, publication list with up to three selected publications, degree certificates, and contact details for at least two referees. Applications must be submitted through Umeå University’s Varbi system by 4 November 2026.

Contact: PI Gabriel Wallin ([email protected]).
