About this position

The University of Turku's Department of Computing is offering 1-2 fully funded doctoral researcher positions in Robotics, starting August 1, 2026 or later. These positions are based in the Turku Intelligent Embedded and Robotic Systems (TIERS) lab, part of the Robotics and Autonomous Systems unit. TIERS is internationally recognized for its research in integrating robotics and artificial intelligence, with a focus on developing multifunctional robotic fleets for industrial and environmental applications. The positions are linked to the Digital Waters (DIWA) flagship project, which aims to create digital twins of real-world water systems by combining robotics, machine learning, and sustainable engineering.

Applicants should be highly motivated master's degree holders in computer science, robotics and automation, data science, or related fields. The research will cover areas such as mobile robotics, machine learning, active perception, robot control, and robot learning. Candidates should have practical experience with mobile robotic platforms (aerial, ground, or surface robots), strong programming skills (Python, C/C++), experience in ROS/ROS2 and Linux, and hands-on experience with robotic hardware and sensor systems. Additional skills in multi-robot systems, distributed sensing, sensor fusion, autonomous navigation, mapping, and deep learning are valued.

The TIERS lab operates a fleet of over 40 micro aerial vehicles, several large UAVs, ground platforms, and indoor testing facilities. Research topics include collaborative autonomy, distributed perception, localization and navigation in GNSS-denied environments, collaborative sensing, and edge computing. Applications span search and rescue, environmental monitoring, exploration of unstructured environments, and autonomous delivery.

Successful candidates will carry out research, participate in teaching activities, and supervise MSc students. The positions are fixed-term until April 30, 2028, with a six-month trial period. Salary for doctoral/project researchers ranges from 2500–2700 euros/month, depending on experience and qualifications. In exceptional cases, candidates who have nearly completed a master's degree may be considered as Research Assistants with a starting salary of 2400 euros/month.

Applicants must separately apply for the doctoral degree study right (DPT) at the Faculty of Technology, University of Turku. The eligibility criteria are defined in the University of Turku Rules of Procedure. The university values equality, diversity, and inclusivity, and offers flexible working hours, well-being services, and support for international hires. The University of Turku is among the top-ranked universities globally, with high-quality research infrastructures and a multidisciplinary research profile.

To apply, submit your application through the online recruitment system by May 4, 2026. Required documents include a motivation letter, dissertation proposal, CV, diplomas and transcripts, reference letters, and list of publications. For further information, contact Professor Tomi Westerlund ([email protected]) or HR Specialist Nina Reini ([email protected]).
