About this position
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Mississippi is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Robotics and AI to join Dr. Xiaopeng Zhao’s research group. The position centers on robotics and autonomous systems with a strong emphasis on turning AI-enabled robots into systems that can be deployed and trusted in the real world.
The research scope is broad and includes manipulation, mobile and legged robots, autonomous navigation, perception and computer vision, motion planning and control, learning-based control, human-robot interaction, and sensing/state estimation. The group’s distinctive aim is not only to build capable robotic systems, but also to validate them, monitor them at runtime, and establish the credibility needed for use in clinical and industrial environments.
The postdoctoral researcher will work directly with real hardware on various testbeds, developing and deploying robotics and AI methods in the area that best matches their strengths. The role also includes publication leadership, contributions to federal and foundation proposals, mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, and development of reusable methods, demonstrations, and shared testbeds that strengthen long-term research capacity.
Collaboration is an important part of the environment, with the project designed to involve clinical, industrial, and academic partners across disciplines. The advertised role is therefore well suited to a researcher who wants both technical depth in robotics and AI and experience building systems that move from research into practical deployment.

What's required
PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related field by the time of appointment. Applicants should have research experience in robotics or autonomous systems, hands-on experience building or deploying robotic systems on physical hardware (for example ROS/ROS 2) or a clear track record of moving work from simulation to hardware, proficiency in Python and modern machine-learning tools such as PyTorch, systems-level programming in C++/ROS, a strong publication record relative to career stage including at least one first-author paper, and excellent written and verbal communication in English. Preferred qualifications include interest or experience in verification and validation, uncertainty quantification, runtime monitoring, safety cases, or reliability, experience with medical or physiological devices or industrial automation and manufacturing robotics, and experience contributing to research proposals and mentoring students across disciplines.
How to apply
Prepare a cover letter describing research interests, relevant experience, and career goals, a CV, a two-page statement of research accomplishments and future goals, up to two representative publications, and contact information for three professional references.
